Polish Matura vs IB Diploma: Which High-School Diploma for Expat Kids?

For families staying several years, the diploma decision matters more than the school building. Here is how the matura and the IB are treated by Polish law and universities.

MaturaPolish state exam; also recognised for EU university admission
IB / EBaccepted by law for Polish first-cycle admission
Kuratoroffice that recognises other foreign certificates

Polish universities admit to first-cycle studies people with a Polish świadectwo dojrzałości (matura), and, under the Law on Higher Education and Science (art. 69), also holders of the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma and the European Baccalaureate (EB), as well as foreign certificates that give access to higher education. Each university sets how it converts IB or foreign results into its own admission points.

Other foreign certificates

Other foreign school-leaving certificates are recognised either automatically (under international agreements or because they give access to university in a country party to the relevant conventions) or through nostrification by the regional education office (kuratorium oświaty), under the Education Law. Documents often need an apostille and a sworn translation. Check with the kuratorium before the final year, not after.
