By Expat Essentials Poland · Reviewed · Focus: the standard category B theory test
Can you take the Polish driving theory test in English? Yes. It is a computer-based exam at a WORD examination centre, not an online exam taken from home. You need the appropriate PKK candidate profile, a confirmed appointment and an accepted identity document.
English questions do not automatically mean English-speaking staff, English administrative paperwork or an English practical test. Confirm any additional language support with your centre.
First licence or foreign-licence exchange: which route is yours?
You are getting your first car licence
The standard route includes a PKK profile, the required training, and state theory and practical tests. You can take a combined driving-school course or prepare for the theory independently before completing practical training.
You already hold a foreign licence
Check recognition or exchange first. Not every foreign licence requires a new test, and not every exchange requires a full beginner course. Your licensing office must assess your actual document and situation.
A theory test may be required for some exchanges, including licences that do not meet the relevant convention format. Do not interpret “non-EU licence” as an automatic instruction to pay for a full course.
PKK means Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę: your electronic driver-candidate record. Your licensing office creates it; a practice-test website cannot issue it. PKK is not your PESEL number.
For a first-licence application, prepare
The driving-licence application and an appropriate current photograph.
The required medical certificate for the category.
Your identity document and the residence-related evidence required in your situation.
Any additional documents requested by the licensing office, including parental consent where applicable.
Residence matters — a PESEL number alone is not enough
Polish licensing rules include a normal-residence requirement, generally linked to living in Poland for at least 185 days per calendar year because of personal or occupational ties. There is also a study-based route involving evidence of at least six months of study. Ask the licensing office which basis and documents apply to you; an exam booking does not establish eligibility by itself.
Under 18? Check the 2026 rules. Category B can be obtained from age 17 under the rules introduced on 3 March 2026, with consent requirements and restrictions for young drivers. Course-start, exam and licence-issue dates are not interchangeable: confirm your earliest appointment with the office and WORD.
Yes. The government describes a self-study route: obtain PKK, pass the state theory test, then complete practical training at a driving school. This does not remove practical-training or other licensing requirements.
2026 update: use Info-Kierowca. The Info-Car website now directs driving-exam reservations to Info-Kierowca. Older guides and screenshots may still show the previous service.
Open the portal and use a supported verified sign-in method, such as login.gov.pl or eDO App. Select PKK and category B — not a professional-driver PKZ profile.
Choose the centre, theory test and appointment
Select the examination centre and location, then the theory test and an available date and time. Check the address, not just the city name.
Select English and review the details
Choose English as the exam language. A translated browser interface does not change the booked language. If the English option is missing, contact WORD before finalising.
Pay through the booking route and wait for confirmation
Use the payment method or available balance shown by the portal. Save the receipt, then check for confirmed booking status. A payment receipt alone is not appointment confirmation.
Contact your chosen WORD about booking at its customer-service desk. Warsaw explicitly offers in-person booking with PKK and the examination fee. Ask which identity document and payment evidence to bring.
Meaning: “I would like to book the category B theory test in English. Please confirm how to select the language, which documents I need on the day, and whether I need a sworn interpreter for the preliminary instructions.”
Budget for the right thing
How much does the theory test cost in 2026?
Check the current fee at the centre where you will take the test. The official examples below are different: there is no single amount you should copy into every booking.
Category B theory only — official examples checked on 14 September 2026
On a narrow screen, swipe the table sideways. These are exam fees, not the total cost of learning to drive. Medical examinations, photographs, training, practice subscriptions, document issuance and any interpreter services are separate items.
Changing the date or missing the appointment
Notify WORD through its accepted written procedure at least two working days before the exam when cancelling or rescheduling. Do not treat this as simply “48 hours”, and check the centre’s office cut-off and signature requirements.
Late cancellation or non-attendance can mean losing the fee. A documented exceptional situation may be considered by the centre, but do not assume a refund or a new date is automatic.
You need at least 68 of 74 points. Questions carry different weights — one, two or three points — and an unanswered question earns zero. The maximum duration is 25 minutes. You cannot return to an earlier question; video clips are played once.
Two incorrect three-point answers, with everything else correct, leave you with 68 points: a pass. Three incorrect three-point answers leave 65 points: a fail.
The useful habit is to understand the rule behind an answer, not just recognise a screenshot from practice.
Preparation that transfers to the exam
How to prepare in English
Start with Polish road rules, not assumptions from driving in another country. Then practise the exam format and the vocabulary used to describe those rules.
Before paying for a practice service, check its English demo, category coverage, update policy, answer explanations and timed mode. Do not choose solely because its name contains “official” or “WORD”.
Use AI as an explainer, not an answer key. Ask it to explain unfamiliar wording, then verify disputed answers against current Polish rules or a qualified instructor. A fluent explanation can still be wrong.
A suggested seven-day study cycle
This is an editorial planning example, not a guarantee that seven days will be enough. Repeat or extend it until the rules and fresh timed questions make sense.

What to check before moving on
1
Take a diagnostic mock test.
Separate gaps in road knowledge from unfamiliar English.
2
Signs, road markings and priority.
Explain why another road user has priority.
3
Pedestrians, junctions and traffic signals.
Read the whole situation before choosing an answer.
4
Speed, overtaking, stopping and parking.
Identify which rule and exception apply.
5
Vehicle safety, emergencies and first aid.
Review explanations, not just your score.
6
Fresh timed tests without pausing.
Find recurring mistakes and revisit those topics.
7
Targeted review and booking checks.
Confirm the language, address, time and identity document.
A better readiness check than one lucky pass
Aim for consistently comfortable passing scores on fresh timed tests, and make sure you can explain your mistakes. Keep a margin above the threshold instead of relying on a repeated test you have memorised.
Before you leave home
Your exam-day checklist
Identity: bring a valid document accepted by the centre. A passport or residence card is among the documents listed by WORD Poznań; a photograph of a document is not the same as bringing the document. Temporary-protection update (September 2026): the electronic Dokument ochrony czasowej in mObywatel is now expressly recognised for identity verification in driving-examination procedures under the regulation effective from 5 September 2026. If this applies to you, make sure the document is active and available in the app before the exam.
Appointment: check that the booking is confirmed and save the date, time and exact address.
Language: verify that English was selected. Raise any mismatch before the test starts.
Arrival: follow your centre’s instructions. Poznań asks candidates to be in the waiting area 15 minutes early.
Support: agree language or accessibility arrangements with the centre in advance.
English questions and an interpreter are different things. WORD Olsztyn explains that candidates unable to understand the preliminary instructions in Polish should arrange a sworn interpreter at their own expense. The interpreter’s role ends before the test begins. Check the arrangements with your own centre; do not assume a friend can translate the questions during the exam.
After the score appears
What happens if you pass — or fail?
You pass
A theory pass obtained under the current rules is valid indefinitely; it does not expire after six months. Other documents and eligibility conditions can still need updating.
On the self-study route, continue with practical training. If the required training is already complete, arrange the next stage with your school and WORD.
You do not pass
Review what went wrong before booking again. A new attempt requires another appointment and fee. Check actual availability rather than relying on an assumed nationwide waiting time.
Distinguish a road-rule mistake from a language or timing mistake: each needs a different kind of practice.
A theory pass is not permission to drive. You still need to complete the applicable licensing process. Also, taking theory in English does not reserve an English-speaking practical examiner. Arrange practical-test language support separately; a sworn interpreter can participate under the relevant procedure.
Check the profile and category. If another WORD holds it, ask that centre to release it before moving the booking elsewhere.
You cannot select English
Contact the chosen centre before paying. Ask it to confirm the language procedure for your appointment.
You paid but have no confirmation
Check the portal status and contact WORD with your payment reference. Do not immediately pay twice.
You do not have a PESEL number
Ask about the centre’s alternative registration route. Zielona Góra lists a date-of-birth option for foreign candidates; online sign-in remains a separate issue.
Your identity document expires before the exam
Ask WORD which valid alternative it accepts, or reschedule in time. Do not leave identity checks until the appointment.
Yes. Select English during booking and confirm it with your centre. Staff language and any interpreter needed for preliminary instructions are separate matters. See WORD language guidance.
Can I take the official test online from home?
No. Online booking and practice tests are not the official exam, which takes place at the examination centre. See the exam arrangements.
Do I need a PKK number before booking?
Yes, you need the appropriate driver-candidate profile. A PESEL number is not a substitute. See booking requirements.
Do I have to attend theory classes first?
No. A self-study route is available: pass the state theory test, then complete the required practical training. See the official routes.
How many points do I need to pass?
At least 68 out of 74. Questions have different point values, so the number of mistakes alone does not tell you whether you passed. See official scoring.
Is Info-Car still the booking website?
Info-Car now directs driving-exam reservations to Info-Kierowca. Follow the current link from your WORD website. See the migration notice.
Does the theory result expire after six months?
A pass obtained under the current rules is valid indefinitely. Other documents and conditions are separate; check them after a long break. See validity guidance.
Does English theory mean my practical test will be in English?
No. Arrange practical-test language support separately. A sworn interpreter may participate through the centre’s procedure. See interpreter arrangements.
